THE CHALLENGES

After completion of the Production Quality Improvement (PQI) Project at the Bangchak Refinery in Bangkok, the electrical demand was
slated to increase from 13.4 to 29 MWe. In conjunction with PTT, an investment decision into a new combined cycle cogeneration plant was authorized, utilizing a small gas turbine & waste heat boiler.Poyry Energy (acting as the owner’s PM) and Thai Shinyro (acting as the
prime EPC contractor) selected BIB to supply & install an auxiliary boiler to provide emergency back-up steam in the event of a CCGT plant trip. The aux. boiler was to operate in a hot-standby mode at full pressure, consumingminimal fuel gas, and being capable of reliably amping to 100% steaming rate in less than 10 minutes. Full realization of these operational requirements by BIB now provides Bangchak Refinery with a highly reliable
cogeneration facility.
